Recently, Team Member Nick Loew had the opportunity to volunteer with GLIDE in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Our team helped serve meals through GLIDE’s Daily Free Meals Program, which provides food to people experiencing hunger and food insecurity. This experience gave us the chance to see GLIDE’s work firsthand. Staff members and volunteers worked together to create an environment where everyone receiving a meal was treated with dignity, kindness, and respect. GLIDE does great work for members of our Bay Area community, and it's important to give more information. If you or someone you know is in need, please pass the rest of this message on to them.

About GLIDE

GLIDE is a San Francisco social-justice organization that provides direct services, advocacy and community support. Its programs address issues including hunger, poverty, housing insecurity and homelessness.

GLIDE Foundation and Glide Memorial Church share a history and core values, but they have separate governance and roles. The Daily Free Meals Program and the support services described below are provided through GLIDE.

How to Receive a Free Meal at GLIDE

GLIDE’s Daily Free Meals Program provides three meals a day, 364 days a year. According to GLIDE, the program serves approximately 1,700 meals each day.

There are no eligibility requirements for receiving a meal. You do not need to complete an application or intake form before eating.

GLIDE currently lists the following meal times:

Breakfast: 7:30–9:00 a.m.

Lunch: 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m., including Saturdays and Sundays.

Dinner: 4:00–5:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday

A special breakfast period is reserved for seniors, families, and adults with disabilities from 7:30–8:00 a.m. each morning.

Meals are provided at: GLIDE, 330 Ellis Street, San Francisco, CA 94102

Families can arrive during the listed meal times without applying in advance. Because schedules may change, visitors should check GLIDE’s official website or contact GLIDE before traveling.

Support for Families and Children

GLIDE’s Family Resource Center helps families access information, emergency supplies, and support services. Its programs include:

  • Family case management

  • Information and referrals

  • Parenting classes and support groups

  • Perinatal services and support

  • Child-development workshops

  • Parent or guardian and child playgroups

  • Emergency diapers and food for families

Services are available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. GLIDE’s website lists the Family Resource Center at 330 Ellis Street and states that it is open from

9:00 a.m.– 5:30 p.m., with some programs also offered virtually or in the evenings. Case management is available by phone or in person by appointment.

Families should call 415-674-6215 to ask about available services, make an appointment, or learn what information may be required. GLIDE also operates the Family, Youth and Childcare Center at 434 Ellis Street. It offers licensed childcare for children ages 18 months through five years and after-school care. Families interested in childcare should call 415-674-6200 for enrollment and availability information.

Housing and Basic-Needs Assistance

People who need help with housing, hygiene supplies or other immediate needs can visit GLIDE’s Welcome Center in Room 101 at 330 Ellis Street.

Depending on availability, services may include:

  • Hygiene kits

  • Blankets

  • Clothing and household items

  • DMV identification vouchers

  • Case-management support

  • Rental assistance

  • Referrals for shelter and other services

GLIDE states that rental assistance may be available for eviction emergencies, back rent, and deposits. Rental assistance is listed as available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.– 4:00 p.m., and applicants must attend a housing-readiness workshop. People seeking rental assistance can call 415-674-6179 for more information.

The availability and hours of Welcome Center services vary. Before visiting, call the Welcome Center at 415-674-6012.

Anyone who needs immediate assistance finding shelter should call 311 or 628-652-8000.

Asking for Help Is Okay

Food or housing insecurity can affect anyone. A job loss, family emergency, medical bill, or increase in living expenses can make it difficult to afford food and other necessities.

Seeking assistance is not something to be ashamed of. Programs such as GLIDE’s Daily Free Meals Program exist to support community members during difficult times. For meals, visitors do not need to prove their income or complete an application before being served. Community Food Bridge is grateful that we were able to support GLIDE’s work. We hope that sharing this information will help more individuals and families connect with the food and services available to them.

No one should have to face hunger alone.
